10 models to compare

Is a self-heating espresso maker heavier?

Self-heating usually adds weight. Three self-heating models weigh 670-755 g; Wacaco's four unheated ones weigh 285-350 g and need hot water supplied.

Unheated Staresso SP300 Plus is the exception at 680 g.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Decide who supplies the hot water

OutIn Mino and Wacaco Pixapresso support grounds and capsules and have built-in water heating. Wacaco Picopresso uses grounds without built-in heating. That is the practical split to settle before packing: a device that makes espresso does not necessarily heat its water.

The coffee-input choice matches exact groups. Choosing grounds does not include the grounds-and-capsules group; choose the combined group for dual-input devices or leave that control unrestricted. Likewise, the heating control needs a supported heating value. Our portable-brewer comparison reads input and heating details without pulling espresso shots, so it does not judge extraction or battery endurance.

Pack weight and water volume can pull in different directions

OutIn Mino weighs 685 g with a 70 ml water capacity; Wacaco Pixapresso weighs 755 g with 120 ml. Picopresso weighs 350 g with 80 ml. Known device weights run from 285 to 755 g, but gaps prevent a claim about the lightest device in the whole selection.

Weight excludes water and accessories you carry separately. An active weight limit excludes devices whose weight is unknown, including Staresso Classic. Water capacity is not a measured espresso yield; read fill and operation guidance before deciding how much coffee a device will make for you.

Before you buy

Which ones take both grounds and capsules?

Five: all four self-heating models (Mino, Nano, Pixapresso and Nano 2) and Staresso's unheated SP200. Three of the light Wacacos take grounds only and the Minipresso NS2 capsules only. The coffee filter treats 'grounds and capsules' as its own group, so choosing 'grounds' alone leaves those five out, and Wacaco's optional capsule adapters aren't counted. OutIn's Nano 2 and Staresso's SP200 give no weight, so a weight limit leaves them unmatched.

Does the water tank size equal the size of the shot?

It doesn't. The tank figure is how much water goes in, from 70 ml on the Mino to 180 ml on the SP300 Plus among the nine that give one, and none of those numbers is a finished drink size. Most Wacacos hold 80 ml, and every weight here is the device alone, without the water you carry.

How fast do the self-heating ones heat water?

Each maker words it differently. Wacaco gives a 180 sec heat-up time for the Pixapresso, OutIn says the Nano heats up in just 200 seconds with a footnote, and OutIn describes the Nano 2 as heating 50 ml of water from 25°C to 93°C per brew. These are the makers' own claims under their own conditions, so they don't line up one to one.
