Do bigger cutting boards get thicker?

Footprint and thickness are separate. Teakhaus's 24 x 18 in carving board is 1.5 in thick.

If you carry it to the sink daily, Boos's 18 x 12 in R01 is thinner than its same-size CCB end-grain block: 1.5 versus 2.25 in.

How the comparison works

Your choices are compared with each model’s product details. A missing or conflicting value stays unknown and cannot satisfy a choice you select. The starting order helps you browse; it does not rate real-world performance.

Source dates appear with each link below. A source date does not confirm today's price or stock.

Give the board space for food and a place to dry

Lengths or diameters run from 9 to 24 in. The John Boos Maple Square with Maple Feet occupies the compact end; the Teakhaus Traditional Carving Board with Juice Canal occupies the larger end. Material and geometry describe the boards, without evaluations of knife feel, staining or long-term wood movement. Compare width as well as length with your counter, sink and storage space. The round John Boos chopping block uses its diameter for both footprint dimensions, so it should not be read as a rectangular board.

The same footprint can hide a thicker chopping block

John Boos R-Board and its rectangular End Grain Chopping Block share an 18 in by 12 in footprint, but their thicknesses are 1.5 and 2.25 in respectively. Thicknesses across these maple and teak options span 1 to 3 in. Choose the height you want to work at and a size you can handle during cleaning. Dimensions and wood species do not predict chopping performance or service life. Keep the exact model and size in view on the product page, and follow its food-contact cleaning and drying instructions.

Before you buy

Will a round board fit where a square one does?

The round John Boos block is measured across its diameter, so it counts as the same length and width and has to clear both of your limits. Either way, it needs a square space that size, even though the corners stay empty. John Boos's 9 in square B9S matches the common Teakhaus thickness below, and the thickest of the 10 boards is an 18 in round block at 3 in.

Which boards have a juice groove or feet?

Besides the Teakhaus carving board, two John Boos boards say so in their names: the CB1052 square board has a juice groove and the B9S sits on maple feet. The other seven listings don't show whether the boards have grooves or feet.

Should I pick teak or maple?

Here the wood also picks the maker: every teak board is Teakhaus and every maple board is John Boos, which calls its wood Northern Hard Rock Maple. John Boos also makes the only boards shorter than 16 in, so for a small counter, maple is where the options are. Teakhaus sticks to 1.5 in apart from its 1 in Thin Lightweight, while John Boos starts at that thickness and reaches the round block’s thickness above.
